Effectiveness

Take a second, and look at the picture above. Do you see it? Do you know why that is important? Notice how one power line is bigger than the other. What if the smaller one said to itself “I am not as big as the other power line, so I should just give up and stop sending power.” Think about how many homes would go without power, how many businesses would not be able to function, how many people would not be able to charge their phones!

Sometimes in life we feel like the small power line. We feel like we are doing nothing to help others, and even if we are, it is not as much as someone else. We think things like “I will never be able to reach as many people as my friend Jim, or my pastor, or Billy Graham, so why even try?” We get so caught up trying to compare ourselves to other believers and their “effectiveness” and compare it to our own that we shut down and stop trying to reach others.

In 2009 I went to New Mexico for a camp, and was told on the way that I was going to be teaching the High School group. That was the summer before my Freshman year of Highschool. I didn’t have the time, ability, or experience to teach these individuals anything, but I went and all week I taught. I don’t remember how it went, and I don’t remember if we had any conversions, but I do remember the lesson that I learned. I learned that God can use any mouthpiece to declare His Word. Goodness, if He can use a donkey, then He can use me (Numbers 22:30).

Imagine with me: the power company goes out and sets up a 300 mile power line, but then they don’t use it to power anything. Wouldn’t that seem worthless? That is because it is… And we do not serve the God of the useless. We serve the God who saves, who works in the lives of people, and uses his servants to reach the lost world. God has you in a place right now to be used. Weather it be in school, work, friends, bingo night, playing video games, doing hair, or playing sports, God has you in place to be used by Him to bring His power into someone’s life.

Now one more picture, imagine if the power company decided that the line that goes to your house is too small to keep functioning and they turn it off. I would give it maybe 7 minutes before you get mad that nothing is working. How would you feel if you (or your parents) called them and they said “Sorry, it was too small of a power line, had to shut it down.” You would not be very happy. Have you considered that there are people in your life that YOU are doing that toward. By refusing to bring them power because you think that you are too small and can’t make a difference, you are denying the power of God in peoples’ lives around you. And they may not be mad now, but one day God is going to judge, and who did you overlook sharing the good news of the Gospel with?

This may seem like a silly analogy, why would the power company ever do that? Of course the small power line is important! But so are the “small” members of the Body of Christ. Without everyone doing his or her job, we are not reaching the world like we should be. And just like all power lines are important, so are all of God’s children in reaching the lost. Don’t let satan fool you into thinking that you are not important enough to be effective, or not strong enough, or not old enough, or whatever the case may be. God uses all of the power lines that He has established, and they all serve a vital purpose in expanding His Kingdom.
